It's not supposed to be super easy, especially when you begin. Yes, it's better if you don't turn while you're in the grass, as it slows you down further and this SC is about having enough speed to pass.
also you should jump when you enter the grass, again to have a bit more speed.
I don't know about ps3 being any different, I don't think it should make a difference.
